New York Times-artikel om Jimmie Åkesson

INTERNATIONELL MEDIA NY Times publicerade i går den 13 september en färsk intervju med Jimmie Åkesson och skildring av det svenska valet.

Swedish Right Sees Rising Support in Vote

MALMO, SWEDEN — Jimmie Akesson, 31, is young, slick and looks more like an up-and-coming advertising executive than a seasoned politician. But Mr. Akesson, the leader of the Sweden Democrats, does not believe in soft sell: He wants to cut immigration by 90 percent and believes that Muslim population growth is his country's biggest foreign threat since the Second World War.

Unlike the Danes or Norwegians, the Swedes, who are seen by many as guardians of liberalism and tolerance, have never elected to Parliament any party campaigning openly against immigration. In elections on Sunday, that could change.

Opinion polls suggest that the Sweden Democrats will exceed the 4 percent threshold needed to reach Parliament. Though an alliance of center-right parties appears to have a narrow lead, according to surveys, the Sweden Democrats could hold the balance of power, something that could plunge Sweden into political crisis.
