Last night on politician owned Sveriges Television, a Swedish equivalent of Channel Four's Dispatches, Uppdrag Granskning, showed a
documentary on a tiny group of expelled Catholics, who held their services in Swedish Churches.
This was portrayed as a sinister threat to Swedish democracy and to us all, since the group included anti-Semites and anti-Muslims and people connected to right wing extremism!
Never ever has the presence of thousands (probably tens of thousands) of Islamists among the approximately 500 000 Muslims in this country been portrayed as a threat to our democracy, despite the fact that most anti-semitic crimes are perpetrated by Muslims and not Neo-Nazis.
In Sweden you can get away with writing about Christians in a way that would land you in jail if it was about Jews or Muslims.
For instance the chief editor of Sweden's largest evening paper asked "when will God get tired of Christians?", with regard to a female priest being sacked for wanting to live in an open lesbian relationship.
The same question about Jews or Muslims would be against Swedish hate speech laws.
Obviously Sweden is Orwell's "Animal Farm": "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."
This gives me a feeling of being occupied. During the last war the occupants had more free speech than the occupied. The same situation again, though this time no military occupation; still the native populations of Europe have less free speech than foreigners from non-European countries.
A classic example are the tapes sold in the main mosque of Stockholm, which in Arabic called for slaughtering Jews. The tapes were reported to the police but Sweden's Chancellor of Justice found no grounds for an indictment.
A Swedish Nazi would have been prosecuted, but not an Arabic speaking Muslim.
That was the message.
Today you can't be sure if you can even make comparisons with the occupied countries during the war and hate speech laws and get away with it. In a democracy like the U.S. you still can, but Europe has never been as free as America.
The situation in EU-occupied Europe is eerie, with regard to what you can and can not say.
Many people no doubt rather be safe than sorry, and so refrain from using their democratic right to protest.
It's rather like mccarthyism as portrayed by leftist Hollywood.
