“Pianist’s life lost during a walk home

John Osnes, a pedestrians’ advocate, died in an alleged road rage attack by Swedish rapper David Moses Jassy. The performer, so far, faces charges of assault, battery and leaving an accident scene.

After midnight Sunday, John Osnes, a pianist who performed jazz standards and Beatles songs at piano bars in Hollywood, put an empty glass down on the counter of one of his favorite haunts, The Spotlight, and waved goodbye to an employee.

“He said, ‘Benji, I will see you tomorrow for sure,’ ” bartender Benjamin Avery recalled.
An hour later, Osnes, 55, lay dying in a crosswalk a few blocks away, the victim, police say, of a violent road rage attack by a Swedish hip-hop artist.

The rapper, David Moses Jassy, also known as Dave Monopoly, 34, made a brief appearance in Superior Court on Wednesday. His arraignment was postponed a week to allow him to hire an attorney.

According to authorities, Osnes, who did not own a car and was a stickler for pedestrian rights, was crossing a street near his residence when Jassy’s rented SUV drifted into the crosswalk. After Osnes struck the front of the vehicle with his hands, Jassy allegedly got out, punched Osnes, kicked him in the head when he stooped to recover his glasses and then ran over him with the vehicle.

Bystanders, including an off-duty Anaheim police officer, witnessed the assault and tried unsuccessfully to detain Jassy, according to authorities. Osnes was pronounced dead at a hospital, and Jassy was arrested Monday after investigators traced the license of his rented vehicle.

He faces charges of assault, battery and leaving the scene of an accident, but the district attorney’s office is mulling additional counts depending on autopsy results and further investigation.

Although he identifies himself as the “CEO of Jassy World Entertainment” on his MySpace page, Jassy is a minor music industry player whose biggest accomplishment to date is rapping on an album track for “High School Musical” actress Ashley Tisdale.

Avery, the bartender, came to court for the short hearing, in part, he said, to see what sort of man would hurt Osnes, who he described as rail-thin and “frail.” Jail records show that Jassy outweighed Osnes — who friends say weighed about 150 — by 50 pounds.

“I guess I was expecting someone who was really gangster or homeless, but he doesn’t appear that way,” Avery said of Jassy, a trim man with light eyes and a shaved head.

Before the short hearing, Jassy huddled in a holding pen with a public defender, an interpreter and a representative from the Swedish Consulate. When he spotted a contingent of journalists from his homeland, some armed with video and still cameras, he pulled his blue jail-issue shirt over his head and kept it there as Commissioner Henry Hall asked if he agreed to the postponement.

“Yes,” he shouted through the shirt.

The public defender said Jassy planned to meet with a private attorney in jail after the hearing. If he makes his $1-million bail, Hall said, Jassy will be required to turn over his passport and wear an electronic tracking device. Osnes never owned a car, and friends and relatives said inconsiderate drivers were his pet peeve.

“He was a very strong advocate for pedestrians,” said his sister-in-law, Darcy Bushnell.

Bushnell attended the hearing on behalf of Osnes’ father and sisters. Her partner, Osnes’ sister Kris, is in “end-stage” emphysema and is awaiting a lung transplant at their home in Albuquerque, Bushnell said. She said that despite his piano gigs and part-time work as a travel agent, Osnes made time every day to speak with his ailing sister.

“He was instrumental in keeping her from feeling lonely,” Bushnell said, her eyes reddening. She said Kris Osnes is trying to balance her grief with her illness, because “if she cries, she can’t breathe.”

“Swedish hip-hop artist to be charged in fatal road-rage incident in Hollywood

Swedish hip-hop artist to be charged in fatal road-rage incident in Hollywood David Moses Jassy, 34, is accused of beating and running over a pedestrian who hit Jassy’s car for edging into the crosswalk he was in. He faces an assault and battery charge.

A Swedish hip-hop artist who boasted of working with Ashley Tisdale, Heidi Montag and other American performers is facing assault and battery charges stemming from a violent confrontation in a Hollywood crosswalk that left a musician dead and bystanders horrified.

David Moses Jassy, 34, also known as Dave Monopoly, is scheduled to be arraigned this morning in Superior Court in what authorities described as a stunning episode of road rage involving a motorist and pedestrian. The encounter between Jassy and the victim, John Osnes, a 55-year-old jazz pianist, occurred very early Monday at the intersection of Schrader Boulevard and Selma Avenue, according to prosecutors.

Osnes, a resident of the neighborhood, was crossing the street on foot when a rented SUV driven by Jassy edged into the crosswalk, authorities said.

Osnes, who did not own a car and was known as a stickler for pedestrian rights, struck the SUV with his hands, authorities said. Jassy got out of his vehicle, punched Osnes and then kicked him in the head when he bent over to retrieve his glasses, authorities allege.

Bystanders, including an off-duty Anaheim police officer, attempted to detain Jassy, but he got back in the SUV and drove over Osnes’ body, according to authorities. He fled the scene and was arrested Monday after investigators traced the license plate of his rented car, police said.

Osnes was pronounced dead at a hospital.

In addition to assault and battery, Jassy is charged with leaving the scene of an accident. The case remains under investigation by the district attorney’s office. Jassy is being held on $1-million bail.

He appeared briefly in court Tuesday afternoon, but the proceeding was postponed after he requested a Swedish interpreter. The public defender’s office represented him at the hearing.

Family and friends of the victim said they were shocked by the violent death of Osnes, a quiet, unassuming man whose great passion was playing jazz standards at piano bars.

“The family is, of course, devastated and cannot understand how such a thing could happen,” his sister, Kris Osnes, said.

Osnes, a Minnesota native who worked part-time as a travel agent, had never learned to drive. He lived in Minneapolis and New York before moving to Los Angeles in 2005, and prided himself on navigating each city without a car.

“He was very sensitive to how pedestrians were ignored by motorists,” said Kris Osnes. “He had little patience for discourteous drivers.”

A bartender at the Piano Bar, a watering hole Osnes visited often, said he was a common sight on neighborhood sidewalks.

“A lot of people are really sad about this. He was a really classy guy. A good listener,” Michael Blum said.”

Prosectuors said John Osnes, a 55-year-old local jazz pianist, slapped Jassy’s rented sport utility vehicle Sunday when it crept into his crosswalk.

Jassy then got out of his car, punched Osnes in the face then kicked him in the head when Osnes bent over to pick up his glasses, prosecutors alleged in a written statement from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors said Jassy broke free of several people trying to restrain him, got back behind the wheel of the SUV, and ran over Osnes as he tried to flee.

Osnes, who prosecutors called a “pedestrian rights activist,” died at a hospital later Sunday.
Jassy was arrested Monday after authorities traced him through the rental vehicle’s license plate.
Jassy was being held on $1 million bail. He faced a judge Tuesday, but his arraignment was delayed a day after he requested a Swedish interpreter.

He was being represented by attorneys from the Public Defender’s Office, who did not immediately return an after-hours phone call Wednesday morning requesting comment.”
